Subject: [alacoun] Future of Bibliographic Control

Gentle Councilfolk,

As most of you know, following the consternation that greeted its cessation
of series authority control, the Library of Congress formed the LC Working
Group on the Future of Bibliographic Control.

Bibliographic Control is something that is of vital concern to all
librarians and their patrons, regardless of the type and size of library,
the clientele of the library, and of the specialty of the librarian. The
role of the Library of Congress in providing bibliographic control is of
vital concern to all the same groups.

The Working Group has hosted two public meetings dealing with different
aspects of bibliographic control. The first was at Google headquarters in
California; the second at ALA headquarters in Chicago. The third will be
held at LC on July 9. In addition to hosting public meetings, the WG has
also invited written comment/testimony on ANY aspect of bibliographic
control, and it will continue to accept such comment through the July
meeting. To date, only a few librarians have taken the opportunity to
submit written comment.

The background paper for the third meeting, as well as summaries of the
first two meetings, and other documents can be found on the WG website at
http://www.loc.gov/bibliographic-future/

Please consider for yourself, or encourage your colleagues to:

-- attend the meeting in July
-- ask questions of the speakers, or
-- make a brief statement from the floor during the comment period
at the end of the day, and
-- especially if you cannot attend the meeting, submit written
comments as instructed on the website.

We want to hear from as many different perspectives as possible. Please
don't think that someone else will make your points for you, because they
may also be expecting someone else to make THEIR points. Also, please be
aware that in considering "the future", the WG is not just thinking about
the distant future, but also the near and mid-term future leading up to it.

Many thanks for any contributions you may be able to make, or to drum up.
